In this podcast, Shae speaks with Darlene McLennan. Darlene is the Manager of the Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET) and the National Disability Coordination Officer for Tasmania. Both of which are hosted by the University of Tasmania. ADCET is a national resource that aims to promote discussion, disseminate information, and advice that informs educators, disability practitioners and students with disability on inclusive education, teaching and support within Australia's Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. Darlene also manages the Disability Awareness e-Learning website, which houses e-Learning modules that aim to build awareness and increase understanding around disability. Over 20,000 people have undertaken one or more of the modules. Darlene has led in the development of several significant national resources that support the success of students with disability in tertiary education, including an E-Learning resource ‘Supporting students with disability in VET’NDIS preplanning toolkit, and ‘How to Transition to Tertiary study for students on the autism spectrum’. Darlene has nearly 40 years of experience working in the disability sector, of which 17 years are within the tertiary disability sector.   

The Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET) plays a critical role in enabling fair and equitable access in Higher Education and the Vocational Education and Training for students with disability. ADCET develops relevant content, offers professional development through hosting webinars and provides information on current practice and research.

ADCET has a range of content and resources that aims to support students with Dyslexia as well as educators. These include:

  • Opening All Options, which provides practical advice on improving access and participation for students with specific learning disabilities within tertiary education
  • Teaching strategies and adjustment that support students with dyslexia
  • Assistive technology advice and information
  • Webinars to inform practice
